Art Market:Changing the "Climate of the Mind”

The unprecedented and undisputed threat of climate change is impacting all aspects of our lives emanating both dread and hope. While scientists prophetically addressed many of the alarming environmental concerns of today, the art market has the power to address drastic changes which are contributing to a better world. There are a lot of creative and innovative alternatives that are in front of us ; this is so inspiring!

How to encourage galleries to reduce footprints in big cities?

Charlotte Qin

A successful exhibition that awakens the population and resonates with an audience creates ongoing ripple effects in society. The best way for galleries to help with adapting to climate change is to intentionally curate ecological-themed exhibitions. On another level, it might also involve working closely with government and private sectors to create campaigns to improve the ecological literacy of the public and encourage sustainability practice.“

Yu Chen:

For a gallery of any size, the main activities that produce greenhouse emissions normally include transport of art, business travels, energy consumption in the galleries and during off-site exhibitions, fairs.

Especially in the big cities, galleries often host a significant area of space, which needs to be air-conditioned and lighted many hours a day even when there are no visitors. These habits are energy consuming and costly.

Then, there is the transportation of art, before and after an exhibition, to and from collectors, often involving excessive packing, overseas shipping and urgent services. These services not only produce a lot of waste, carbon emission, but also, cost a lot of money.

Like any other businesses, galleries are facing increasing challenges post pandemic, including fierce competition, higher operational costs and unpredictable turnover. To survive and even thrive during this time, galleries will need to be more creative and responsible.

What are the motivating factors for galleries to consider becoming more sustainable?

Charlotte Qin

Integration of Digital Technology

During the pandemics, numerous galleries of all sizes including major cultural spaces, such as London’s V&A Museum in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture platform, had invested in digital platforms to save the population from art deprivation in lock-down. Just like how the new norm of working-from-home has helped us reduce environmental expenses on running a full-time office space, it is also becoming common for galleries to continue to have a digital presence. Maintaining a moderate balance between remote connection mediated by technology and social gatherings can be a new model offered by the gallery, whereas the adoption of VR/AR, as well as Blockchain technology may all start to slowly integrate into this digital space. The Swiss-based Arcade Digital had made the historic bridge between blockchain platform and the traditional art market by launching the sales of the Swiss artist No1 (No one) on the OpenSea as NFTs, in parallel to the exhibition space of a gallery, accompanied by Arie Art Agency. The opponent of such blockchain integration is the carbon emission of ETH mining. However, NFTs are still a relatively fractional portion of all Ethereum transactions. I want to argue that the culpability of NFTs is similar to calculating the share of emissions from flying and eating meat-based meals instead of plants. It all comes down to responsible individual and organisational decisions. Not to mention a great number of efforts, such as Blockchain for Climate Foundation and Crypto Climate Accord (CCA) that aim to enable all of the world’s blockchains to be powered by 100% renewables by 2025.

Like any form of technology that first entered public life, there is always a great buzz generated from both sides, the supporters and opponents. The NFT art community has emerged from blockchain technology independently from the art world, while the art market has not yet entered the early stage of adopting blockchain technology to its financialisation. Whether you believe that the future of the art world will be on the block chain or not, integration of digital technology, including block-chain based ones, can be one stream that goes into the ocean of a cleaner, less wasteful art market.”

Financial benefits:

Understanding the current cost structure and carbon emission (for example energy consumption), and taking proper measures to reduce, mitigate and off-set such emissions can bring direct cost savings.

Brand image:

Sustainability is the new strategy. To remain relevant and successful in an increasingly competing art world, galleries need to follow the global trend of ‘think green’, to be able to attract sponsors, supporters, collectors as well as media. Demonstration of proper sustainability strategy and measures can be associated with being ‘innovative’, ‘responsible’ and demonstrating leadership. These are qualities people look for in businesses of the future.

Positive engagement:

World wide big cities are seeking solutions and best practice sharing for a healthier, responsible and eco-friendly working and living environment. Art galleries play a significant role in the city landscape and lifestyle. A responsible and environmentally friendly gallery space will likely increase employee and stakeholder satisfaction, public support and potentially privileges from the municipality.

What changes could artists incorporate in their journey to advocate a more sustainable impact?

Yu Chen:

Art has the power to communicate cross-borders. Artists have the freedom, and the ability to create artworks that express their own emotions, feelings, and opinions about serious subjects. I believe it is time to take it to the next level if we wish to generate more positive impact as a community.

In your opinion, how can artists have a more sustainable impact?

Yu Chen:

Clarify your objective and goals:

Know what you want to advocate for, why, and who is your audience. Think about how you can communicate to them more effectively.

Get your facts right:

A powerful communication starts with fact-based information. Understand your subjects well, and make sure you are conveying the messages clearly and correctly, even though it might be through abstract art form.

Widen your perspective:

We often start with a subject we care about or know the best. However in a highly globalized world of today, many things are correlated in ways that one action may have direct consequence on another. It is always helpful to try to understand more of the context of your subject, to make sure there are fair considerations of what you advocate for.

Be the change you want to see:

As an artist, you are the best ambassador of your work, and what you want to advocate for. Know your topic well, show it in your art, and live it every day. This all together will help you reach the audience, connect with them and make a real influence.

Start thinking about cross-boundaries:

Being an advocate means you may have to step out of your comfort zone, learn about new fields and what is happening in other parts of the world. It’s not always about Art, it’s also about YOU, and how you can make a difference as a human being.

Intuition:

It basically means that you become a channel of the universe, the creator, or something that is greater than you and you are a part of. The great thing is that it not only helps take off the pressure of personal success, but it also allows opportunities and networks to flow towards you.

Artists have special roles in society:

Some of us are highly sensible individuals, gifted to see and feel things that the majority of others do not (yet) see. The world needs artists to heal, to feel, and to dream! I strongly believe that the art world shouldn’t be working separated from the real world. In the traditional sectors, especially in science and policy, artists can bring the sentimental elements to the work. For example, my art revolves around the element of water. In August 2020, I met and connected with the president of the Water Initiative at my exhibition and we both felt a strong resonance.

Water Initiative is a student initiative from the Graduate Institute of Geneva (IHEID), Europe’s oldest school for studies of international relations, that focuses on raising awareness about water issues and fosters better water policy. Our collaboration started there. Together, we have created a collaborative series called Between Clouds and Oceans, elevating the ancestral, cultural values of water in the international discourse about water governance, diplomacy, and management. This collaboration had been a symbiotic relationship which had educated me on the complexity of water issues we are facing in the real world; in return, the artistic collaboration had helped the initiative to take their academic research to a greater public and audience.

Communicate a message to the world:

I would like to tell every artist that we don’t have to be donating 100k every year to GreenPeace to make a difference. No matter at what stage we are in our career, there is a lot we can contribute to by branching out our practice in the real world. May we all find our habitat or a platform which allows us to use our art as the vehicle to communicate our message to the world and touch the hearts of the people.“
